We can now announce the full details of our next Future Human event, Sonic Boom. We’ll be looking at how music technology is opening up previously untapped worlds of sound, and allowing even the completely untrained layman to create detailed and affecting music; it takes place from 7-9.30pm on Wednesday March 9 at The Book Club. Our guests on our panel debate are three of the UK’s brightest musical creators and thinkers. Matthew Herbert is frankly a national sonic treasure, having produced a huge variety of work often from the unlikeliest of sources (pig butchery, newspaper production, ambient sound recorded at a Berlin nightclub, and so on), but always with humanity and soul intact; Adam Harper is the author of the forthcoming book Infinite Music, an inspirational treatise on how we’re currently in a golden age of musical modernism and innovation; and Sabina Plamenova (aka Subeena) is one of London’s most exciting young producers, creating stunningly varied work using just a laptop and microphone. As per usual, you’ll be able to put questions to them via our wireless microphones, or via our big-screen Twitter feed.

Also appearing on the night are Nu Desine, a sound engineering team from Bristol who have just launched their new instrument, the AlphaSphere. It’s a beautifully executed concept that allows a huge variety of music to be composed with your hands, through manipulating a series of touch-sensitive pads. It’s a world away from the baffling inputs and settings of many synths and drum machines, and Nu Desine will be showcasing the instrument as well as composing music live with audience members.
