Smash Publishing: the debrief

The best tweets, pictures and links from our Smash Publishing salon at the Book Club.

Yesterday at Future Human we explored how digital authors are dismantling the books business, and our audience took us way into the night with their probing questions about self-publishing, innovation in reading, and how to make money from the whole endeavour. We’ll publish a podcast in the next few weeks listening back to the debate and exploring new areas, but for now, here’s some more information on our guests if you want to explore further.

Joanna Penn is both an author and a writing consultant – if her infectious enthusiasm for self-publishing’s hybrid financial model got to you, you can learn more from her about the world of self-publishing through her consultancy site, The Creative Penn. Or you can find out more about her “Dan Brown meets Lara Croft” fiction at her personal writing site.

Mark Edwards told us he’s just completed his latest book in collaboration with Louise Voss, which should be a bestseller like the previous two, Killing Cupid and Catch Your Death. If you want to find out more about their unique writing partnership, head here.

Henry Volans, head of Digital Publishing at Faber, told us about an upcoming digital project featuring readings of Faber’s poets, including Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes, alongside the texts. It joins a set of innovative and sensitively deployed apps that he has helped develop, including interactive versions of The Waste Land and Shakespeare’s Sonnets – find out more about his projects here.

Finally, huge thanks go out to our Bad Dollar writers James Hunt, Brie O’Keefe and Jon Fortgang. Bad Dollar is an exciting digital fiction imprint, which distributes stories all based around a single concept – the unwise spending of a dollar. We ran a competition to create some Bad Dollar stories of our own, and received some fantastic submissions, featuring everything from a Vauxhall Zafira that becomes tainted with adultery to one-dollar packets of noodles that horribly disrupt a well-meaning student’s digestive system. We look forward to reading the final stories from our trio of writers, and if you’d like to submit your own story for consideration by Andy Whitlock, Bad Dollar’s founder, head to their site to find out all the info.

Here is some of the best Twitter conversation from the evening (thanks to FH alumnus Victor Henning for the above photo). We hope you can join us for our next Future Human salon, Body Hackers, on September 19!
